Hi,

I'm trying to upgrade my mini mac (OSX 10.4.11 tiger, g4 processor) but when I insert the installation dvd, (I have a macbook running osx 10.5.8) it says it cannot install.

Do I have to purchase a specific installation dvd for the mini mac? Or is there a way to proceed with the installation/upgrade?

Do I have to erase the disk using disk utility? If yes, how? (Mac OS Extended Journaled, Case-sensitive journaled or just case-sensitive?)

Do I have the right processor that is required?

Thank you very much! This work is very pleasing to me.
No, your Mac is old as shit and won't work.

You Mac mini is almost 7 years old.

I guess you can still install Leopard (10.5) on it. What installation dvd did you try ?
I tried installing leopard 10.5.8 (the installation dvd of my macbook) I just got my hands on this old mini mac, didn't use it before and thought I might give it a try to upgrade it.
I installed SL on my old pos no probs.
Strange, it keeps telling me 'Mac OS X cannot be installed on this computer.'
10.6 is intel-only. if you want to upgrade you need to get hold of 10.5 - but not hardware-specific. you need a stock 10.5 retail disk, not the kind that comes with a new mac.
Hmmm... Minis are Intel... I'm sure I upgraded from 10.4.
they started with G4s apparently...

And he said that it was G4 in his post

My only suggestion is to get a general copy, not your Macbook specific copy.

thanks
Heck yeah, the original minis were PPC powered- it's why they were so cheap. Unfortunately, the logic board went bad on mine, so it's just a gutted box at this point.

But yes, as others have said, you'll need to get a copy of 10.5, which is the latest you'll be able to install on that machine. Fortunately, I found the transition from 10.4 to 10.5 to be one of the best upgrades Apple's ever offered. Realistically, you're probably not going to get a copy of Leopard for very cheap, but it can be had for around $50 occasionally. I'd recommend you post a want-ad to the LEM swap.
i sold an old retail 10.5 disk for $140 here in japan a few months ago
