Safari / Firefox
Hello,
I dont want to troll here. I'am a recent user of Mac OS X and I tryed Safari. It was cute interface and all but, there is no real way to synchronize my google bookmarks so I switched to Firefox. I have some questions ..!
- Is there a way nor tricks to have google bookmarks in Safari or Camino? (i googled and find nothing intresting)
- Is there a realy nice skin for Firefox looks like Safari ? (looked over DA but skins only changed the buttons) edit : looks like i found something here edit : i think i'am just going to switch to Camino ![]()
Thanks for help!

Re: Safari / Firefox
I would just use the Firefox 3 beta. It goes well with the Leopard interface and is a much better browser (faster, smoother, all that jazz).

For Safari, you might want to check this out:http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php? … 9135209367
It's not a great implementation, though, from what I can see. If I used Google Bookmarks, I would probably tweak it myself, but it seems kinda pointless, frankly.
Not to start a flamewar, because each browser has its merits, but Safari is a lot more Mac-like (native Cocoa) and faster (particularly with the new developer beta, which is lightning fast). I would recommend it over Firefox, if just because Safari is fun to use. Hyatt is a genius. But Firefox has its merits too, and I don't want to get into that. My point is, if I were in your shoes, I would try to make Safari work, because it is amazing.

I'll try Camino because it realy looks promising. Do you think you can tweak that workflow script ? I'am lost without my bookmarks :-)

But, but, beta sucks not to mention all that nasty bugs.
I think I'm-a wait for the final release of Firefox 3.

Re: Safari / Firefox
For kicks, I'm writing you a SIMBL plugin that adds a Google Bookmarks menu to Safari.
It's not too hard, and its a fun exercise.
It should be done by tomorrow--or maybe that's optimistic.

I typically switch off between Safari and Firefox depending on what I need. As was stated, each browser has its merits, and I see no reason to use one exclusively over the other.

Re: Safari / Firefox
There. I just programmed it. I call it "Goggles", because it lets you see/quickly use your Google Bookmarks in Safari, and it sounds like Google.
SCREENSHOT, NOT MOCKUP
Almost fully functional. My code SUCKS. A lot of stuff is hardcoded in. I'll fix that, add niceties, maybe get rid of the separate menu. Then I will release it to the world.
If anyone wants to make a spiffy icon of Goggles, I'll give you mad credit in the about window.

Re: Safari / Firefox
Google discontinued its support for the Google Bookmark Browser Syncing today, actually. Not sure if that will stop syncing altogether but there is no more official support for it and the Firefox extension won't be made compatible with Firefox 3.
Also, if you do use Firefox 3 head over to http://takebacktheweb.org and use what Firefox should look like on OS X and forget all about damned Proto. I am still pissed off with how they ruined that skin after it was adopted in the second beta. (I had been using it since Firefox 3 Alpha)

Re: Safari / Firefox
Released!
Download beta 1 at:
gnomepi.com/random/GogglesB1.dmg
You will need to download SIMBL first: http://www.culater.net/software/SIMBL/SIMBL.php
It's barebones at the moment, but it's perfectly functional in my tests. Please send me all feature requests and bugs you can find. If you like it, I will surely release it on MacUpdate and my own website.
If the installer poops out on you, let me know. I spent a lot of time fighting with it to make it work.
It was a neat project which taught me a lot about Cocoa features I didn't know about. You don't need to thank me, it's all about learning to program Cocoa well--and that will just help me down along the road.
Glad I could be of help ![]()

gnome : i dont have the "synchronize..." in preferences. When i finish install it ask me to configure but there is nothing (i have a french version for the record)
Ah, thats the problem. Right now, I only have it localized in English.
You could solve the problem by right clicking Safari, choosing "Show Package Contents", and in the window that appears navigate to Contents/Resources/English.lproj and copy the file "BookmarkPreferences.nib" to the folder Contents/Resources/French.lproj. Obviously, this will change Safari to use the English bookmark preference panel instead of French.
Sorry thats so complicated, but this is pre-release software
I'll try to fix it for French too.

Re: Safari / Firefox
I'll look into it.
EDIT: I've fixed all your problems and I will release a NEW version tomorrow after I package it up. This version is much faster, lets you use more than 25 (stupid mistake by me), sorts your bookmarks into folders by tag, and is much nicer code not that you care ![]()

Re: Safari / Firefox
OK, sorry for double-posting, but I think this deserves a bump given how long I've been working on it...
http://www.gnomepi.com/random/GogglesB2.dmg
This version has all of the fixes I mentioned above--and also, it no longer uses the username/password from the Bookmarks panel, but instead uses the currently logged in Google user.
I hope you like it. I will add a few more features (sorting, tag excluding, etc.) and then release on MacUpdate.

It's awesome. Thx for your great work.
Could you add the "Quick Bookmark Search" feature to your bundle? like pop up a quick search pop-up box after pressing a shortcut key, e.g. press "Home" key twice..

I was actually working on that before I got distracted on other projects. Maybe as soon as those are done?

I use Safari, you would have to be genuinely mental to suffer using the Mac version of Firefox, its quite frankly a pile of garbage and no number of hacked together memory hog extensions will change that
