improved stack icons (and another scurve replacement)

Like a lot of other people, I don't like the way stacks change their icon to match the contents, and I came up with a quick fix. It's not perfect, but it gets the job done, and maybe someone else will find it useful. Hopefully it hasn't been posted already.

Here's what my downloads and to-do stacks look like.

Just create a new folder within the stack, name it " " (space), and give it the icon you want to see in the stack. The downside is you have an extra folder floating around, and unfortunately titling it ". " (dot space) kills the effect.

icons:  Aero Orbs by ~neo014.
dock: download (separator.png, scurve-l.png, indicator_large.png)

Best of luck and looking forward to someone finding a better way...

someone's posted the same idea, but your icons with the transparent overlay bring a nice visual kick (rather than just the standard folder icon).  it's great being able to still see the contents of the stack behind the top level.  (dock is looking good, too) smile_thumbup

Nice going! I was trying the same approach but couldn't find a character that consistently sorted before everything else.

The icons are Aero Orbs by ~neo014, available at DeviantArt.

Glad you guys like the dock smile. The dock itself is tinted green to match the desktop, but that's an easy hue shift to match your own.

download contains 3 files:
- separator.png (narrower and more transparent than default)
- indicator_large.png (very transparent arrow for active apps)
- scurve-l.png (the dock bground)

I've forgotten the terminal commands to switch them all in, but it's easy to find elsewhere and you guys probably already know how to do it.

Great. I'll definitely use something like this as soon as I get upgraded.

Omg! This is exactly what I've been talking about... Well done. This really changes the mood of the dock.
Is it possible to add color, texture, or any other visual element in these files? Are the graphics mapped to a real 3D object, or are the graphics making it look 3D?

I almost forgot... Can we see the full screenshot? That looks great!

Can't wait to get my Leo smile

they have white backgrounds cause leopard know's they are images. you have to convert them to icns and put them on a folder.

I submitted something similar to Mac OS X Hints two days ago.  Thought I was sooo original!  smile

Your icons do rock, much better than the ones I'm using.
