Why, exactly? Anything that goes into the Dock is automatically made into an alias. Don't confuse the new Mac user! :P
@Niclas: What's that wall? I've seen it but I can't remember where!

Wrong, the folder itself doesn't have to be an alias, just the apps inside of it.

I don't want to make this into the "If you drag stuff into the dock does it become an alias"-thread, but if you drag stuff into it, it's no longer the original file. You can't trash the dock icon, you can't drag it on top of other things, i.e. it's no longer just the file, but something pointing to the original. I don't care how you call it, but it's a shortcut, alias, link to that file. And no, indeed, it's not stored as "File X alias" on your disk but in the preferences of the Dock app, which makes no significant difference. Bottom line; whatever you drag into your Dock, don't worry about it, because you can't destroy / delete / do bad stuff with the actual file. Period.

But if you drag an app into this "alias" folder in the Dock, you actually Move the app. You have to fill it with alias (and this is not automatically done) if you want a list of favorite apps without moving them…

Well, I can't show anyone that app I'm using - it's super secret. It's the next big thing :)
