I'm having a slight issue with candybar. Every time I try to update my HD it crashes. I've tried to email panic about it but they're having a week off or something. Got an automated reply that they're not in the office until some date. Anyone having similar issues and found a fix?
There is a new update for Candybar to 3.3.3. It was just updated when Lion went to 10.7.4. I read on another thread here that the update fixed some issues. Have you updated Candybar?
It's on the latest version.

I have an issue with my Candybar as well. Seems to crash randomly. Sometimes when trying to drag and drop icons. Sometimes without me doing anything, after a while. Granted I have not bought it yet, I don't plan on ever paying a company $29 for software that barely stays open for 5 minutes, to let me do something. :-!

Used to be such a great app. Any alternatives?
It's served me great for a long time. Recently been acting up on me, though. It is a tad overpriced and an alternative that I heard about recently was iconbox. I'm not in the mood to ditch out more money before I hear from panic. It's just frustrating.
Have you tried with iCondubber?

It can customize general icons for drives or assign any icon as a custom icon for any file/folder/volume.
If you want to do the first thing, go to the SYSTEM section and navigate trough the sidebar (volumes icons are NOT in CoreTypes.bundle); if you want to assign a custom icon to a particular file/folder/volume, you have 2 choices:
a) once you've selected the icon you want to assign, in iCondubber, open the contextual menu of the "big" icon on the right an click on "Assign as thumbnail to...";
b) copy an icon from a Finder window and then click on the "Clipboard" menu in the menubar, then click on "Assign as thumbnail to..."

I guess I'll just mention this here instead of making a new topic but is anyone else able to change their finder icon? I was doing software updates and when my computer restarted all the main system icons, etc went back to default and I got all of them to change in Candybar except Finder. I tried manually changing it but it still hasn't changed.
None of these replies answer the initial question. The hard drive icons won't update.
Then repair permissions. There's no other explanation.
I haven't found an icon that can't be changed, except the black apple in the translucent menubar. You can always manually change the hard drive icon and finder icon in the dock.
I'm not denying that you can or can't do it, it just won't do it for me. I've repaired permissions, the lot. I think there's something up with candybar.

If both Candybar and iCondubber failed, it sounds at least strange that
I think there's something up with candybar

since Candybar should be fine. Well, if you tried with iCondubber too: I'm trusting your words, so I assume you did... that's way I don't think this is a Candybar issue.

What icon are you trying to customize, exactly?

IconBox is working fine for me.

Candybar still acting buggy, so will likely just get rid of it.

Had some trouble with Candybar as well, and even lost the default Open Folder state.
I downloaded a trial version of IconBox, and even though I had restored system defaults with CandyBar, IconBox kept showing my system icons as being themed.
After restoring system defaults, this time using IconBox, all is well again - including the Open Folder state :-)

So +1 on ditching CandyBar, like right now.
If I have not misunderstood, Rayy said he did already know IconBox too, but he still has problems with his icons, so this sounds like something not related to any icon manager in particular, but IMO it's more like an issue in his system.
About the HD icons not updating I think is the age-old thing where your permissions on the the HD needs to be read&write for all. Atleast that's what I've been doing when my HD icon for the main HD would not change. the CandyBar version I used never crashed on me I don't think.

I think I can't help any further.

CandyBar recently has been acting up here too. I never change system icons anymore but I experience the same things other people here does. I noticed that when I was creating a new CandyBar library the folder CandyBar created was named Pixadex instead of the usual 'CandyBar'.
