[iTunes] Unified gray (non-shiny) and aqua blue theme for iTunes 9.2
Overview: The point of this theme is to make iTunes look like a "normal" Leopard or Snow Leopard application, with normal window toolbars and scrollbars and such.
Here's the "before" shot:
Here's the "after" shot:
List of things that I changed:
- Main window top and bottom toolbars now match Snow Leopard default gray colors
- Mini-player background color now matches Snow Leopard default gray colors
- Equalizer window background color now matches Snow Leopard default gray colors
- Secondary window title bars now match Snow Leopard default gray colors
- Play/pause/stop/rewind/FF buttons were reverted to the previous iTunes 8.2.1 style
- Scrollbars changed to aqua blue (Warning: It will look weird with Graphite appearance!)
- Headers changed to aqua blue (Warning: It will look weird with Graphite appearance!)
Download it here:
http://www.sendspace.com/file/kubf3x — June 16, 2010 (for iTunes 9.2.0)
How to install:
Overwrite /Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/Resources/iTunes.rsrc with the file from this download (instructions and original iTunes 9.2.0 version of iTunes.rsrc also included)
Background information:
The iTunes 9 UI really bothers me. Just when the rest of the OS (for the most part) had finally caught up to the lead iTunes took many years ago, this comically bad UI happens. Looks nothing like any other application. Too shiny. I think the iTunes team is playing a joke on everybody now.
It's so bad, in fact, I cracked open the iTunes.rsrc file (yes, it's 2009 and iTunes is still using an RSRC file to hold all its UI resources) and tried to make iTunes 9 into a good Mac OS X citizen.
To switch up the images in iTunes.rsrc, I used the old donationware standby, ThemePark. That application is ancient these days, but so is iTunes' architecture, so it works just fine. Eventually I'll probably succumb to the ridiculously shiny UI... but not yet.

Best one yet! fits the rest of the UI WAY better than that other "stuff"
Thanks for your work!

Nice, though I don't so much care for the aqua scrollbars.

Nice - saving me the trouble of uploading my own. Still I have a few ideas :
1. your scroll arrows aren't aquafied, nor is the bottom right square (where they meet)
2. your mod has a lovely top part and buttons
3. the white diamond (play progress in lcd screen) is probably done by some 5 year old. Perhaps this is an improvement :
4. from your preview, I can't see if the sidebar header was themed :
5. to make the graphite variant, desaturate the blue parts with minus 80.
Maybe we can mix up some things ![]()

I love this mod in it's current form - I don't mind iTunes 9's new LCD Screen background and the lighter colours everywhere (e.g., top of sidebar album art display)
The one thing I'd love though is to replace the white backgrounds in the grid view with iTunes 8's black background.

Now can we just get one with the subdued buttons/background as above, but with the original iTunes scrollbars? Please? ![]()

do any of you know if the files for the itunes main window and mini-player window support
alpha-transparency? I am meddling about in the RSRC right now, and i brought opacity down, yet
it does not take affect except for the four little corner squares.

Re: [iTunes] Unified gray (non-shiny) and aqua blue theme for iTunes 9.2
metacym: Only the superimposed elements (buttons, icons, highlights) support alpha transparency. You can't reduce the opacity on the background image; it will not make the entire window transparent.
Others: I don't have any personal interest in creating a version of this theme that includes Graphite scrollbars or iTunes 8.x style scrollbars. If anyone else wants to "hack my hack" to do that, please go ahead.
I've released a new version for September 12, 2009: http://www.sendspace.com/file/ouerw4
Minor changes in this version include...
Snow Leopard style "traffic lights" and also a darker volume control slider
No more white diamond at the current point, instead it just rounds off the edge
Modern square buttons in Smart Playlist dialogs, not those 2001-style circles
Remember this is designed for Aqua Blue only, not Graphite! Enjoy.
