These are creative enough, they dont need the writing trust me..less is more.
Also please do a proper cs4 set with black letterforms and cs4 gradients..this set is cs3 to me...

Hey MacDaddy,

I made all those tweaks that your not diggin' on purpose. If you've used the new icons in the dock you'll know that black on blue, or brown, or dark reds, etc... doesn't exactly make for good readability. So, I went back to the white to make the type pop. Most of the backgrounds are from the CS4 gradients (some I have have punched up to make more vibrant). The concept behind the set was to bring consistency to the branding. If you go online, you'll notice Adobe is all over the place with their icon presentation. Flex still uses white type, while others use black.

One last note: These are 512 px icons. Your right, people might know they're Adobe CS4 icons, but it's just a subtle accent. At smaller sizes you can't see the little type. It's only for people looking at them in Coverflow—I think the icons stay pretty minimal.

I'm glad you think they're cool. By no means is this taken as a dig at my work. Just want you to know that all of this was considered when designing these, trust me.

It might be interesting to see them all at 3/4 rotation, where the leading edge isn't dead center and the Application glyph is a bit more pronounced. They'd be more visible at smaller sizes, too. It might be worth playing with to see how it looks.

It could also be fun to pop out the letters and sink them in a bit. Or have the letters as cutouts and see the thickness of the cube, assuming they're hollow, of course. Go full 3D!

I agree with MacDaddy, the text labels are redundant, nearly invisible and unreadable at sizes that people use in the Finder.

I'm of the school of thought where icons should be pictographic representations of applications or items in the Finder. IMO, text based "icons" are signage, not true icons.

Yeah, I did some test with different rotations, and I wasn't as pumped about the look. I did experiments with the type cutting into and out of the cubes and as much as it was cool 3D, I wanted to make something that was consistent but similar to Adobe's current executions.

The last comment you made about text basted icons as, "not true icons" is kind of interesting... Considering my title, the colors, and the letters looking like a children's toy. One could almost make the connection that these are stylized building blocks. Not everything has to be literal interpretation.

Yup, I have a dock coming soon (Probably over the weekend). Two system icon replacement sets coming in next couple weeks too. So stay tuned.

Great. Now I want to use these wonderful icons - but it would mess up my dock because no Lr (Lightroom) is included - bummer.

No worries MacDaddy, I was just trying to give a little insight into the choices I made. I should probably go "full boat" and do folders, documents, and launch screens. You got me thinking...
