[req] upcoming VLC/Mac OS X buttons/dmg image/and more.
Hi,
I am one of the Mac developer of VLC, and we are looking for new graphics for the upcoming VLC.
This is a new version which has mostly been rewritten from scratch, and it is a work in progress.
Among the pics we need:
- A stop button for the toolbar control (we already have a play/pause button from the old VLC).
- An icon for the playlist in the left
- An icon for a fit-to-screen option in both the fullscreen panel and in the toolbar.
- A background for the DMG.
- Some visuals for the a-la frontrow fullscreen menu.
- Any icon that you'd like to refresh
- Any idea you might have to improve the visual appearance of this VLC version.
To give you an idea on what we currently have, here is a link to an early development version of this upcoming VLC. This is an encrypted dmg and the password is "macthemes2". (Warning: This is a development version, is missing many features, and is unstable).
http://jones.videolan.org/~videolan/pdh … -alpha.dmg
Please, drop me a line if you want to work on that.
Thanks!
Pierre.

Im sure many will want to work on this as VLC is a superb app. Have you had a look at the HUD mod of the current VLC on the forums, looks really nice and make it a joy to use.

Take a look on Hirogen's gui makeover mod
Many "HUD" as we can have on vlc for mac will be amazing!

Its great to see a dev asking for the community's input. Thanks for caring. ![]()
This is an HUD VLC Mod: http://macthemes2.net/forum/viewtopic.php?id=16782459
These are icons:

Also, it seems that the alpha is Intel only, is that the way the development is headed or is there still gonna be some PPC love?

HUD is a little annoying for most apps because it floats above all other windows.
I'm sure we'll see some cool mockups before long though.

Yes, I'd like to see maybe HUD for settings, but not for the actual player. Just to state it.

This will not run on my ppc. Is this only Intel architecture? and if so why?

Just know that VLC should not be a HUD app...

if it is not HUD it needs to be a border-less window with separate play, settings controls.

HUDs aren't meant for main application windows, it's really that simple. So please don't even consider it.
I have some feedback:
- The main control buttons should be in the same style as QuickTime 7 (Leopard) and iTunes 7. Like this:
-The bottom part of the unified window background has a weird gradient
- The separator that separates the player part from the playlist part should hide when hiding the playlist (when clicking the PL button).
- The time indicator should have a nicer graphic than just an Aqua blob, same goes for the volume slider. You might want to look at QuickTime and iTunes for inspiration.
- Hide the video viewing part when opening an audio file.
- The separator separating the Sidebar from the playlist looks different from the system default. (Leopard)
- Make VLC truly borderless. Right now it isn't.
- All text on the unified background should have the indent effect, like the "VLC Media Player" text in the title bar or "PL" on the playlist button. (Leopard)
As for the icon maybe you can get permission to use this one:

Hi,
Thanks for the prompt replies.
This is an intel app for now, but be sure that'll change at release time.
For being closer to quicktime, good idea. Yet we do lack some quicktime styled button. (the fullscreen/fitscreen/playlist/equalizer/etc).
The icon looks really nice!
We won't go HUD for main windows. Yet I have in mind a floating video mode that could have no decoration.
Pierre.

Personally I dont want VLC to be like Miro or radio player, but want it to have a / be simple main window/player.

+1. I'd rather see the Preferences window worked on to make it easier to visually digest and more Mac-like, maybe giving it a System Preferences-esque appearance like some web browsers do (Shiira, iCab). Also, I've been trying to figure out for ages how to rip a video stream and transcode it as a DivX AVI, so maybe add some "one-click" presets to the GUI for common codec+container formats like DivX and iPod-ready videos?
A few more suggestions, based on when I was using it as an audio player on a Mac that was too slow for iTunes:
-Remember how the playlist looked when it was last open (which drop-down arrows were expanded, etc.)
-An issue I've run into when loading a folder of MP3s is that it starts automatically playing the first track, so if I drop my main music collection folder into the playlist window it will start blasting the same song (in this case, a loud AC/DC one) without me doing anything ![]()

Re: [req] upcoming VLC/Mac OS X buttons/dmg image/and more.
I'm really glad you're doing this, because VLC looks so stuck in the past right now with it's glossy Aqua buttons. Generally, I agree with .Neo's ideas. Unlike others, though, I think that the app icon is fine as it is. The look fits in to the OS enough, and I think it is important to retain the same identity crossplatform. The Very Lovable Cones are great too, but I think that the less saturation and different lighting makes it unsuitable for a default icon (also, the angle of the cone would make it look worse on Leopard's 3D dock). Also, I really think that HUD for the main window is a bad idea, so I'm glad you're not doing that.
Thanks for listening to the community! Just remember that this is a theming forum and does not represent the ideas of VLC's whole userbase.
The early new version is already looking promising.

yar! i'd have to agree with pyn... we should really get a thread going for VLC UI mockups if that's the direction you're planning on taking.
as mentioned earlier, focus on improving the preferences UI, please. the controller is pretty solid as is, could use maybe just a little refining.

Re: [req] upcoming VLC/Mac OS X buttons/dmg image/and more.
I don't like the way the volume slider no longer provides any feedback as to where it's actually set. It also no longer seems to snap to 100%, so once it's moved it's hard to get it back to the original position.
The video display area shouldn't be there unless needed. I use VLC mostly to play unsorted new music before committing it to my iTunes library (mostly long mixes and such) and a big black area will make the app look too heavy compared to what I'm working on.

Re: [req] upcoming VLC/Mac OS X buttons/dmg image/and more.
a few replies:
Please remember that this is a *very* early version, and some comments are not really appropriate at this stage of development. (Not blaming though
)
About the video view that is showed when unneeded. This will change. (btw, you are currently allowed to close that video view part).
About the sliders, that will change.
Basically all the toolbar item should be visually changed.
The preferences are also on the todo list.
We just need some visual style... If you want to do some mockup feel free!
Pierre.
