Re: Continue?
I agree with Klark (who looks strangely familiar
)
Not sure what to think of the back, but at first glance, it comes forward with the lighter shade of the end piece. Is there a light source hitting it? Also, is that a reflection on the casing? It looks matte otherwise, which is why I ask.
Nice WIP though. Please, by all means, continue. I look forward to seeing the rest of the set. ![]()

Re: Continue?
Sometimes realism isn't what the eye and mind expect to see. The current back hilight may work in a scene rendering, but not in an icon.
If you make the entire icon set in 3D, everyone will be very impressed. ESPECIALLY if you let us 'rotate' our own. Definitely continue!

Thanks for all your nice comments and critique!
I'll definitely continue.

What do you mean by "let us rotate our own"? I can post the .c4d file if that's what you want. I could also make a flash applet for downloading the icons, but that would take a long time to program and edit in Photoshop Extended.

Re: Continue?
Very original
the 3d program work is very impressive, and I have no problems with the highlight on the back, besides that its actually brighter than the front, which is sort of, rarely seen?
Of course you should continue, never give up on any kind of artwork, it always gets better with the more time you put in ![]()

I just meant posting the source files. I believe that scripting language could be used to autorotate and render. Though if you could do a flash applet no one would complain...
It would open up posibillitty of icons from interesting perspectives.

Re: Continue?
Thank you for clarifying, Just_Jake. I will post a 3D Studio file if you do not have Cinema4D. I can also post a .psd if you have Photoshop Extended. However, I will not do this until the icon set is complete. I hope you are okay with this.

Re: Continue?
Light source should be from directly above, as if the menu bar is a strip of light.
I think if there was a little more light on the top of the front edge, then it would look less weird.

Re: Continue?
woa! Freaking baller! Do you have any other examples to show? If you do please show them! This seems like it will be a sweet icon set if you finish it. If you can put it on like a dark grey or gradient background so i can see the shadow under the drive. (seeing as I don't have a black bg for my desktop).
Good work, keep it up ^^

Re: Continue?
Jon, what do you mean? Photoshop and Illustrator automatically anti-alias by default... And your icons so far have had no saw edges.

Re: Continue?
When I put the icon into PS3 Extended and delete the black background the anti-aliased pixels become blackish on the edges and it looks like it has a saw-edged black border. If you have done 3D work before you can see my dilemma. In a 3D program like Cinema4D you cannot create transparent pixels on the border. Thanks ![]()

Re: Continue?
Thanks for the advice Tendo, but is there a faster way? PS3 Extended's "Refine Selection" and "Quick Selection" are very hard to operate. I don't see a lot of icons made in a 3D program here; is this the wrong place to ask? Thanks for all of your help and comments.

Re: Continue?
Is there a way to export it from the 3D app into a transparent PNG or something?

Re: Continue?
Jon, I know exactly what you are talking about. What sort of export options does Cinema4D have? If you could get Cinema4D to export renders without the black background your problem would be fixed, ie exporting the Cinema4D renders as PNGs with transparent instead of black matte from Cinema4D.
I think that is also what Powerdrift was saying.

Re: Continue?
Example 5: Removable
In case you're wondering why there are two removable disc icons, Candybar lists "USB Drive" and "Removable Disc" as separate icons.
This is the last drive icon.
Update:
I have decided to release the drives first as a mini-set. If enough people like them I will continue. If people don't like them I will have to stop. This icon set is not easy to do, and I may be stopping because of this.
